Water Polo Fever in Rovinj: The Fifth AWL Tournament Brings Decisive Battles

The fifth tournament of the Alpine Water Polo League is upon us, and for the first time, it will be hosted by the beautiful Croatian coastal town of Rovinj.

The tournament kicked off on Tuesday at Ljubljana’s Kodeljevo, where VK Ljubljana Slovan faced Pallanuoto Trieste. The match got off to a surprising start, with the visitors from Trieste taking a commanding 4-0 lead. By the start of the final quarter, the scoreboard showed 9-3 in their favor. However, Ljubljana’s “Dragons” shifted into high gear and mounted an impressive comeback, closing the gap to just one goal. The match ended in a thrilling 9-10 victory for Trieste.

Ljubljana Slovan now faces another challenge as they head to Malta for the second leg of the Challenger Cup quarterfinals. On Saturday, they will need to perform a small miracle and overturn an 8-15 deficit against Sliema ASC.

The fifth AWL tournament will be crucial in determining which teams will secure a spot in the Final Six. Currently, Zagreb’s Mladost leads the standings, followed closely by Slovan, just one point behind. The league’s top scorers are Mitruk Adam (ASV Wien) and Branković Vito (HAVK Mladost), both having netted 27 goals so far. With the standings as they are, as many as eight teams still have a realistic shot at reaching the Final Six.

As always, we anticipate thrilling and closely contested matches, all available for live streaming!
